Long-tailed Bat Brooch
Long-tailed Bat Brooch

Homeland Collection
Materials: Sterling Silver, Moonstone

An ancient symbol in many cultures, the bat can symbolize good luck, longevity and happiness.
Native to New Zealand, the Long-tailed Bat/ Pekapeka-tou-roa are our only native land mammal. Originally there were three bat species that existed in N.Z, but only two survive today, the long-tailed bat and the lesser short tailed bat. For this piece, I focused on the Pekapeka-tou-roa (Long-tailed Bat) as they are classed as ‘Nationally critical’ and are in danger of becoming extinct if we do not protect them and their natural habitat.
Handcrafted in Sterling Silver, this piece features a luminous Moonstone set into the bat's belly. As with many of my designs, this piece is fully 3-dimensional, with the back of the Bat being just as detailed as the front of the brooch. This is a fabulous piece for any Bat lover, conservationist, or for any enthusiast who enjoys unique, handcrafted jewellery.
