Jörmungandr or the Midgard serpent is one of the three children of Loki the Norse trickster god and Angrboda the giantess. Their three children were exiled from Asgard by Odin and the other gods because of a prophecy regarding the end of the world or Ragnarök. Jörmungandr was tossed into the sea where he eventually grew so large that he encompassed the world, biting his own tail forming an ouroboros. One of the signs of the coming of Ragnarök is Jörmungandr releasing his tail. This action causes the seas to churn, flooding the land and washing the serpent ashore where he joins his brother Fenrir and the sons of Muspell before they engage the gods of Asgard in an epic battle on the plains of Vigrid. Jörmungandr and Thor are then entangled in combat which ends in both of their deaths.
