I have long admired the red-crowned crane that features so often in Japanese art and handcrafted items. As a symbol of good luck, longevity and happiness, the crane also symbolizes a lifelong partnership.
Carved from ancient mammoth ivory, this piece features a rich red garnet set in 18ct yellow gold adorning the crown of the bird. The toggle also features a larger deep red garnet set in 18ct Yellow Gold as the toggle of the necklace. This piece is suspended from black woven cord and sits well on its own as an objet d'art when not being worn.
Red-crowned Cranes feature in various Myths, usually involving a Crane which either needs help or to be rescued, is found by a man and looked after or nursed back to health by him. To repay this kindness, the crane returns as a beautiful woman and becomes the man’s wife. Helping to pay her way by weaving beautiful cloth from her own feathers. Once the husband discovers this, she must leave him, gifting him one of these cloths to remember her by.
