Native to New Zealand, the Tuna/ Longfin Eel are cherished by many and some would say they are part of our DNA. The Tuna/ Longfin Eel is currently at risk in NZ and numbers of these incredible taonga are unfortunately declining. There are two Longfin Eel Necklaces in my latest Nature Studies collection as I have long been fascinated by these indigenous animals.
This particular piece is carved from black-lip Mother of Pearl Shell which demonstrates a beautiful transition of colour between the darker and lighter parts of the shell. When watching a swarm of mature Eels swirl around in the wild, you will often see flashes of their white/silver tummies in amongst the dark tones. I have textured the Tuna/ Longfin Eel skin to give a slippery, textured feel.
The pendant is strung on woven cord and features sterling silver attachments at the back of the necklace to allow the pendant to be adjusted in length, as well as Sterling Silver beads at the front of the necklace as highlights.
The underside of this carving also features my signature makers mark, in Sterling Silver, inlayed into the back of the carving.
