Ken Auton
Born and raised in the far north of New Zealand, Kenmore trained and worked as a manufacturing jeweller in Auckland and London throughout the 1970’s and 80’s. Having been in constant contact with the art world and seeing the possibilities of employing his jewellers skills in a different and interesting medium, he moved into high end bone carving and bronze casting in the early 1990’s. His bone carving which included many of his jewellery based materials such as gold, silver and precious stones and his sea life based bronze sculptures were an immediate success. After several years of producing and enjoying bone jewellery, sculpture and bronze dolphins, whales and seals amongst others, he decided to extend his range into native wildlife most notably the distinctive and iconic weta and the tuatara which have been a focus of his interest and skills ever since.
Along the way, various dragons and many other assorted sculptures made their appearance and have been bought and enjoyed by clients around the world. His years of touring with the Dunkley's craft show during the 1990’s established a firm base of galleries some of whom still exist and deal with him to this day.
He continues to use bone and upcycled ebony as a material for his carving enhanced with various other material such as gold, silver, brass, bone, thread and anything else that will enhance the particular piece he is working on.
Ken lives on a 5 hectare bush clad property in the mid north of New Zealand with his wife Carol and assorted animals.
