The Bela & Lucy Necklace began life as a visual ode to Bela Lugosi who played Count Dracula in the original 1931 Dracula film. The striking black and white images that captured the stars in their roles at that time were full of drama, romance and suspense. The inspiration lead me to incorporate Mother of Pearl Shell which captures all of those things to me with it's iridescence and sensual allure of it's natural beauty.
The main carving is hand carved from two different shells, Yellow-lip Mother of Pearl and Black-lip Mother of Pearl Shell. The piece is backed onto Blackened Sterling Silver with a finely crafted frame of 18ct Yellow Gold from which 4 fine points of gold hang.
The stones on the left hand side of the Necklace are Honey Opals which have a warm sunny glow to them which is reflected in the yellow-lip Mother of Pearl carving of Lucy. The stones to the right side of Bela are Hematite which are framed in 18ct Yellow Gold.
The Drop shaped Stone at the bottom of the Necklace is also Honey Opal which I have set into 18ct Yellow Gold to bring out the rich colour of this beautiful stone.
This piece is theatrical but with a subtlety which allows it being worn on just about any occasion.
A truly unique one of a kind piece.
Like all SLJ items this piece was hand carved and crafted by Steph Lusted's own hands in her central Wellington Workshop in New Zealand.
