In Aotearoa, the Tui bird is a vibrant and abundant species, renowned for its complex vocal range. The sounds of Tui in the forest differ from those in urban environments, and their ability to mimic various sounds and even human speech has long been noted. The Māori myth of Tui as messengers to the gods likely stems from this extraordinary gift. Today, Tui have a unique relationship with humans, inhabiting both the forests and our backyards, creating a sense of connection.
In this work, the Tui are represented as urns, symbolizing its messenger parallel connection between the physical and spirit worlds. These Tui embody a dual existence: the exterior represents the bird’s presence in our physical world, while the interior space—hidden from view—belongs to the realm of Gods and spirits. Through this, the urns evoke communication not through chirps, but through the silent language of body expression. The posture of these Tui each communicate to us in universal language of emotion. They serve the myth of messenger birds.
