Greywacke beach cobble from Wairaka Point, Pukerua Bay where there are wonderful rounded beach cobbles of the highest quality blue grey greywacke. The piece illustrates the simplest form of a human figure - done with the minimum of cuts - pointing to spiritual power. 2500 years ago the Mezcala people made these figures in stone about 30cm high. They were ritual objects associated with architecture and the afterlife. Wonderful sculptures of enormous power. To my mind these works were a prototype of the Tiki figure and hints at the theory that there was contact into the Pacific from South America, unproven of course.
