Siberian white nephrite jade I collected when living in Russia in the 1990s. There are many legends of Taniwha in Māori myths, both positive and negative forces that abound in nature. In this piece, the white indicates a positive Taniwha with whale elements hinted at through the dorsal fins – a connection with the ocean. There are many stories of the relationship between humans and whales.
