This brooch merges sculpture, jewellery and art objects into one and is a real show stopper when worn. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis special brooch comes with a custom built display cabinet to allow this piece to be admired as a piece of art when not being worn.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe main body of this brooch is carved from Mother of Pearl Shell (yellow-lip). This is a time consuming process of working with both wet and dry machinery and hand tools. Picking the right shell to use is also important, as it needs to be thick enough to allow me to carve the organic forms of each petal and give the illusion of the petals overlapping.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe centre of the flower features a Green Moonstone set into a 18ct Yellow Gold setting which gives a striking backdrop for this stone. Each of the Stamens have been crafted individually from 18ct yellow gold wire. I have hand crafted the backing plate from Blackened Sterling Silver which is in the form of a quatrefoil (simplistic 4 petal flower form). There are x3 stones representing dew drops on the petals. These have also been set in 18ct yellow gold which adds to the luscious colour palette of this piece. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eInscribed into the backing plate is the name of this flower, \u003cem data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cstrong data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eJapanese Anemone.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis piece has a special feature of 18ct Yellow Gold set into the crevices of an area of the shell which may have been eaten away or is a natural flaw in the growth of the shell. Inspired by the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold, Kintsugi – ‘the beauty of imperfections’, I have chosen to highlight this flaw by filling it with gold. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe display cabinet is crafted in Oak with a black finish and comes with a wall mount. Picking the right shell to use is important as it needs to be thick enough to allow me to carve the organic forms of each petal and give the illusion of the petals overlapping.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have then handcrafted the centre of the flower in 9ct Yellow Gold which features a honey opal set at the centre and stamens of gold. There is a full backing plate of Sterling Silver which has been inscribed with the name of this piece, Belle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis brooch also has a special feature of 18ct Yellow Gold set into the crevice of an area of the material which displayed a natural flaw. These bats are our only native land mammal here in New Zealand and I wanted to highlight just how precious and endangered they are. \u003cbr\u003eOriginally there were three bat species that existed in N.Z, but only two survive today, the long-tailed bat and the lesser short tailed bat. For this sculpture I focused on the \u003cem\u003ePekapeka-tou-roa\u003c\/em\u003e (Long-tailed Bat) as they are classed as ‘Nationally critical’ and are in danger of becoming extinct if we do not protect them and their natural habitat. Our native Jasmine \u003cem\u003eKaihua\u003c\/em\u003e is also endangered and can be found in wetlands which is a common hunting ground for long-tailed bats who feed on insects hovering above the water.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEach flower on the native jasmine vine is carved by hand from Mother of Pearl Shell. \u003cbr\u003eEach flower is unique in shape and form. Some of the flowers are open exposing the flower stamen which I have crafted in 18ct yellow gold, others are uncurling buds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe Vine itself is hand crafted from x15 separate Sterling Silver elements which are then soldered together and composed in a way to portray life and movement. I later learned that these incredible pieces of nature did in fact come from the inside of a small squid, the Rams Horn Squid, and these shell's were what created the squid's buoyancy.
